My grandad was a navigator on a Lancaster bomber which flew many bombing raids over Germany during the war. He was only 17 when he joined up and said that the war made him the best friends of his life, and also found him his wife, my Nana.

When my Grandad turned 21 his friends took him to a local pub to celebrate. All the pretty girls in the pub lined up by his table to give him a birthday kiss. My Nana, Eileen Connor, reached his table and he pulled up a chair and asked her to join him. Weeks later they were married. Nana was in the WAAF and Grandad in the RAF, but his commander gave him a week off to celebrate his marriage in a small cottage by the airfield. Whenever he had to go on a raid, he would run across the airfield and be picked up by his crew. When he landed he had a few more precious hours with my Nana.

The two of them went on to have 5 children and live very happy lives. There are now many grandchildren who love him dearly and are very proud of him.
