My great granda, John Clark Moffat, was in the royal border regiment. He was a paratrooper and what he had to do was parachute over enemy lines and kill the enemy to break the stale mate.
He has won many medals for his job including:
- The France and Germany star
- The 1939-1945 star
- The defence medal
- And a medal for efficient service
Whilst he was in field in Dunkirk he was promoted to an officer because of his good attitude and bravery but because he had a family to feed and an officer’s job was usually for rich people, he turned it down so they gave him a certificate from Montgomery.
He also was an instructor and taught people in Cockermouth drill hall to fight in the war, which he has wrote a book about what they did every week like to load and fire guns.
