My very first memory around the age of eighteen months is of my parents panicking to get me out of the living room, through the 'french' windows, and down the steep concrete steps into the air-raid shelter. Our house was not damaged, but my subsequent school friend's house nearby was badly damaged when a land mine fell opposite. His cot was left hanging out of the bedroom when the whole wall fell out. He said he didn't remember anything about that! My father subsequently told me that Lord Haw-Haw's true identity was revealed by the mistake he made in claiming that 'the small fishing port of Ipswich' had been completely destroyed by German bombs!
