I was originally from Guernsey, and so coming to the mainland was quite exciting. I stayed with my sister while I served for five and a half years in the ATS. One of my postings was to Beaumanor Hall near Leicester. I was a wireless operator, and our job was to intercept signals from the Germans. We then passed them to the people at Bletchley Park to be decoded. The work we did was so secret even we didn’t know what we were doing. In fact it wasn’t until about thirty years later that we found out what we had been up to.

The hut which I worked in is still standing in the grounds of the Hall, and I visited it recently.
