After the "Twice to Berlin" episode several Air-crew members were returned to Non-operational duty. I was lucky enough to be one of them and I was Posted to R.A.F; ELVINGTON a few miles out-side York. Here I was given the duty of forming a team of Engine fitters with expert knowledge of changing Lancaster Merlin engines. This was on our air-craft at home but also to be able to go mobile to any of our lancasters that had gone down with engine failure at other locations. On many occasions this meant the team working through the night and somtimes under tarpaulins to get the Lancaster back on the "front line". This Posting, nearly the longest in Service lasted nearly 20 months and was very rewarding in many ways, I was living out of camp in YORK over-looking the Minster from my bed-room and one min walk from the River Ouse.
