I can remember the Sheffield Blitz. We weren’t allocated a shelter as we had a cellar.

I had four sisters and my mam had us sitting in a line on the settee as my dad didn’t think the cellar was suitable.

This night the brass sneck on the door was rattling as the planes went over. My sister shouted the Germans have dropped a bomb on our sneck.

I went to King’s Road School and there was a shelter in the schoolyard. We had to practice walking in line down into the shelter and sitting on duckboards with our gas masks on. The shelter wasn’t used very much.
