On February 10th 1943 the Newbury Canal Boys and Girls modern School was bombed in the afternoon. Fortunately most of the children had gone home, but some stayed for after school work and sadly they were killed. 15 people including those in the arms houses and St Johns Church near by. It was a terrible shock. I remember hearing the sirens and the explosion. We have had memorial services for those people who died.
