The Children’s Compassion

For them the war was ended, the strife was o’er.
Five dead soldiers, battle-slain the day before.
They’d given their all, could give no more.

The Children came, laughing and shouting in their way
Then suddenly stopped at what they saw, laid in the hay.
They stood wide-eyed, mouths agape, then turned and ran away.

What little worldly goods he had.
Were soon recovered for each lad,
Then each, for burial was blanket clad.

Again they came, a silent little band
All carrying now, a posy in each hand.
With serious look, they laid them on the dead,
Smiled timidly at me, then turned and fled.
