My Mum and her family lived in Edge Hill close to the sidings at Edge Hill station where her Father worked in a reserved occupation as a Lineman. He was working the night the big landmine hit the College building as the Germans were bombing the line chasing an (I think) ammunition train. My Mum and her Mum and sister/brother were in the shelter in Clint Road School next to the college and she says she remembers the roof opening up and all the dirt and debris falling down on them. There was then a mad scramble to get out and my mum got trampled. There was a woman shouting "mind the little girl". They got out, unlike many others, and she remembers her father running down the street towards them. He heard the landmine and thought they had all been killed. My mum cannot even now talk about the Blitz in Liverpool very much. Just now and then she lets snippets slip.
Their street was badly bombed and they had to move out for a while. They all went with a neighbour to see if her mother was alright, but when they got to her house it was flat and she had been killed. There was nothing to do but turn around and come home again.
