My Mum's cousin, George, was one of the youngest tank commanders in the British army in the 2nd world war. As a member of the Yorks and Lanks regiment he fought all the way from the beaches of Normandy through France, he proudly wore the yellow scarf which distinguished comanders.

He was part of the liberation of Paris and bought my Mum a bottle of perfume. Unfortunately she was destined never to receive it. Some weeks later he was one of the first allied troops to liberate Belsen concentration camp. He never really spoke of those horrors, but he apologised to my Mum because during his time he had put the perfume on his scarf and wrapped the scarf around his nose and mouth in an attempt to keep out the stench.He used up the entire bottle of perfume.

Those men were real liberators and heroes, the world owes them a great debt.
