I remember Soho Road being bombed and as a child collecting shrapnel and playing on the bomb sites. Bolton Road School was hit by a bomb so we had time off. We only went to school from 9 until 11 o’clock. We also had classes in people’s front rooms, about 8 of us at a time. I remember sweet rationing, we could have a quarter of sweets, that would be about 100 grammes to last a month.
