I grew up in wartime Thetford and although just a child at the time I can remember listening to the bombs falling. My grandfather was a member of the ARP and the St. John's Volunteer Ambulance Service. One night a bomb went straight down the chimney of my great-grandmother's house in Station Road. What a relief it was that it didn't explode!
The most important memory I have of the war is the night when my father came home. He had been a prisoner-of-war of the Japenese, and when he finally arrived home he brought with him oranges, chewing gum and a story which must never be forgotten.
