I was born in the USA because my mother was posted to the British Embassy in Washington. She started work in the late 1930s with MI6 having graduated from Kings with a 1st in modern languages, (she spoke 7 including Catalan), but transferred out of boredom to the Foreign Office.
We transferred back to London in 1944 in the Mauritania. I remember causing a great rumpus by wandering of by myself and ending up in the bilges and being awestruck by what seemed an insurmountable ladder to climb back out. A friendly sailor rescued me.
I was evacuated to Tetbury to stay with the local GP who had won an MC at Gallipoli and who had run guns over the Irish border before that. My mother came up from London by train when she could and I was walked to meet her through the watermeadows. Once tripped over a cow pat and was well and truly wellied for spoiling my pristine clothes.
I remember being taken to swim in a neighbours pool and being fascinated to see a man with an amputated leg standing and diving into the pool. Shortly afterwards a yellow Spitfire fled over us at about 20 feet.
I also just remember being taken to tea with Queen Mary and being terrified!

(My father had been a padre in the RAFVR but renounced his orders to join the RA. He did a bunk and only resurfaced in the early 60s. I never met him and my mother refude to talk about him even to the security services when I was being vetted. He ended up as a major in the RA in India. Fell ill and married the nurse! He had 2 daughters whose details I do not know.))
