I was on the frontline just before the river mars dug into the trenches. The trenches were dug in zig zags, so you would have more chance of surviving if a bomb dropped. There were seven men in each including a corporal. We were not allowed to leave the trenches at all . We laid in mud which was our bed. We crawled about day after day night after night. We couldn’t get a wash for weeks. Our meals were rolled to the trenches in canisters as the cooks were afraid to get to close.
My trench was light enough at night to read a book, this was due to the glow worms! There little heads were all around the trenches looking at us!
