"We used to see convoys come through, Army convoys come through. We stood up in the back bedroom and we could see the flak from London. I can remember standing at my grandmother’s door and the Lancasters used to come up from Podington. One night I was going home and that was when the bombers were going to Coventry. It was just one continual drone, they were up so high but the sky was full of them. There used to be a searchlight battery up my mother’s road, a little jumping up one, not a great big concern. It had about three searchlights. But I’ll never forget that night when the bombers were going up to Coventry, just one continual drone.â€
