This is a story told to me by my late father of some of his experiences during WW2.
My father was based at RAF Pocklington for the majority of the war , at the base were young chaps of a similar age to himself . one day shortly after pay day the lads from Liverpool were completely broke after playing cards and loosing , they turned up with the most gorgeous tomatoes which were eagerly bought by everyone who was approached my father was told by the NCO to try and find out where they were getting them from as they had promised to get more . one day my father followed them as he knew they needed money for alcohol that night , to his surprise they had gone to the local sewage treatment plant and were busily bartering for the next batch to sell. my father managed to get back to the base before their return, after telling the NCO what he had seen . The sale of the tomatoes attracted no buyers this time as everyone had a very good idea what the fertilizer was used in there remarkable growth .
My father was always happy to serve with people from Liverpool , his father was a from Liverpool he said their courage was second to none and that they would never let you down , they were the source of many a commotion as they lived life the way they fought to the full.
