I was an orphan in a Rhyl home. They decided to send the entire home of children there for our own protection. I was there for about 4 years and saw a Spitfire crash; the pilot survived.
Another time I saw a Hurricane land in fields nearby having got lost. It took off next day after being guarded by the army overnight.
The only explosion we heard was a stick of three bombs which just missed the Chester to Holyhead railway line.
After VJ Day I returned to the home in the Wirral and had a good smack for shouting "The war's over, we're going home! Hooray!"
