During the War I attended Bletchingley County Primary School, in Surrey. My Mother, Ivy Hawkins, worked in the school canteen which was, as I remember it, a 'tin chapel' like building standing in the school grounds. With all the food served Mother stood out side for a breath of fresh air. At that moment a doodlebug flew over and its engine stopped directly above where she was standing. Mother sssumed that when the engine of a doodlebug stopped it did a 45 degree turn towards the ground. She yelled at the top of her voice 'It's hit the school'. Inside tha canteen another helper was hauling up the 'ovvabraid' containing all the recently washed tea towels for drying. On hearing Mother's call she released to rope she was hauling on and the 'ovvabraid', loaded with wet teacloths, plummeted to the round striking the head cook, Mrs Saunders, a goodly blow on the temple.
The head cook was the only casualty of that doodlebug - it landed harmlessly in a Cockley Wood about 2 miles away
