3 THE REFUGEES
After the Blitz, which killed and injured so many in Belfast there were even more people left homeless. Several army lorries came along our road asking homeowners to take in refugees, even for a few nights, until more suitable accommodation, that is “Nissen huts”, could be provided. My mother and several other neighbours immediately opened their doors and a family of a mother and 2 children found shelter with us. It was due to the Blitz that society realized the appalling unsanitary conditions a large proportion of the Belfast working class population lived in. One of our neighbours had to burn the mattress her refugees had slept on as it was infested with lice!
