“I can remember that at school we used to vie with one another to have the most fashionable gas mask holder. You took your gas mask holder out of the box and put it in your green rexine and put a zip across the top, with a shoulder strap; and then you carried it around (like an accessory); the idea was that you bought them and added your own ‘bits and pieces’ to them. My sister was always getting into trouble, because she’d use hers almost as a weapon. We certainly didn’t carry them in those nasty cardboard boxes; we had these nice stylish bags.â€
