During the Second World War I was in the Sea Cadets in Dunstable. One evening someone came to our Unit in Dunstable and asked for volunteers with bicycles to act as messengers.

The attraction was that when the siren went we were allowed time off from School to do our duty.
Often the message was just a folded piece of paper. which had to be taken to the other side of town.

One vivid memory I have was of a German fighter sweeping down the High Street. Whether the bullets were coming from the fighter or from the the Typhoon of the Royal Force that that was chasing it I don’t know but it was still exciting to watch.
Another memory I have was of a V2 rocket coming down in the middle of the night in the town. Windows of the shops half a mile away were blown in.
