On a day pass to see my wife I had to walk from Chester to Market Drayton (a long walk!). I had to do this as there had been an air raid and all roads were closed and no transport running. It took me all night, although I did manage to catch the milk van for the last 5 miles.
I got 7 days punishment, confined to barracks, as I was late back. We'd just come out of Franch and we were due to go to the Middle East. I went all over the place in the war, including Syria, Greece, and Sudan
