I joined the ATS off my own bat because I had two friends already in the ATS. Unfortunately, after about six months, my father came up to Bulford and
insisted that I leave because he wanted me to go home and look after my mother who was ill. I went back to the ATS after about a year but once again my father insisted that I leave to nurse my mother. It upset me very much because I wanted to be independent and this has stayed with me all my life.
