In 1940 when I was 7 years of age I can recall that during an air raid the three of us going to 'our safe place' which was a cupboard under our stairs. My father closed the door, and because it was self-locking, we were trapped inside! After quite a time, I can remember me saying to my parents that the postman would have to rescue us, but fortunately my father managed to force the door open.
