This account was written by Edith Rust shortly after her 90th birthday:

When the war started on September 3rd 1939 I was 8½ months pregnant and due to go into St. Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth for the birth. The hospital then decided that pregnant mums should be evacuated to the Isle of Wight and so on September 15th 1939 my son Trevor was born at Haven Street Hospital, Ryde, Isle of Wight.
Then in 1941 I was evacuated again to the Isle of Wight due to the heavy bombings, and Portsmouth thought it better that mums and young children should go to a safer place; but I am afraid that we were not there very long because H.M.S. Hood was sunk by the Germans and my husband was on the ship and unfortunately lost his life; and so I returned home to live with my parents who helped bring their grandson up.
