In common with practically every armoured unit in the world, the Polish 1st Armoured Division would have originally been a cavalry unit. The emblem depicts the plume of feathers that Polish cavalrymen of old would wear on their helmets. The swishing noise that these feathers made was intended to scare the horses of the enemy.
