I was 22 at the time. The night before VE day my friend and I went into town to have a drink. There was a strange air of expectancy and excitment hanging around. We all new that something big was about to happen.
Later that evevening Winston Churchill came on the radio and announced that the war was over, and tomorow was VE day and we all had a day off work (I was working in a munitions factory at the time at the time and days off were very rare)
How can I explain how we felt? All those hard miserable times were over. So much happiness and excitment which was to last for several days.
The following day(VE day) a few friends and I went in to town and walked around, so did thouands of others, it was absoutly packed. I remember several American lorries going down St Mary Street, honking their horns non-stop. Ther most of been 50 people at least hanging on to the sides and sitting on the roof. We walked to the City Hall, peoplr were dancing and kissing each other, evertone was your friend. We stayed intown all day just walking around and it was the same atmosphere everywhere. On the way home we could hear some church bells ringing. What Joy!!!!! We had not heard them for years, (it would have meant an invasion when the war was on)
It was a wonderful day never to be forgotten, though I'm sure we all gave a thought to the boys who would never come back, a few we had grown up with.
