I WAS IN CHURCH IN DEAL KENT WHEN WAR WAS ANNOUNCED BY THE VICAR. THE ROYAL MARINES ALL STOOD UP AND MARCH OUT OF CHURCH, GOING STRAIGHT BACK TO BARRACKS. HALF AN HOUR LATER, ABOUT 11.30 THE SIRENS SOUNDED FAR AND WIDE AS A LOW FLYING, UNIDENTIFIED AIRCRAFT FLEW OVERHEAD. I HAD TO WALK FROM NORTH DEAL TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF WALMER TO GET TO SCHOOL, CARRYING OUR GAS MASKS WITH US. WHEN THE SIRENS SOUNDED WE WOULD ALL HIDE UNDER OUR DESKS AS THE AIR RAID SHELTERS WHERE NOT FINISHED.
