Thelma lived very close to the Goods Station, which was directly bombed in September 1941. Because of the location of her house she and her family spent each night sleeping in the culvert underneath a factory where they would be safe in case of an attack. When the goods station was hit, Thelma's house was damaged but not 'bombed out'. Thelma was most disappointed about this because children living in houses which were bombed out were sent a doll by the Americans
