Derby visited by the King and Queen.
Gwyneth Kelly
These memories told to Jo Taylor of the Holmewood and Heath CAP team, and added to the site with the author’s permission.

Gwyneth lived in Hunloke Road, Holmewood, Derbyshire. She remembers that they never went out during the blackout, and that they would hide under the table or under the stairs during an air raid.

She remembers that they had a young girl evacuee from Derby, but that the girl was too homesick and went back home. They had become friends though, and when Gwyneth was about 14 she went to stay with the girl in Derby for a week. One night soldiers woke everyone from their beds and made them go to the shelters. There was a huge air raid and whole streets of houses were bombed. Later that week the King and Queen visited and everyone came onto the streets of Derby to watch. They shook hands with as many people as they could, including Gwyneth. It was the highlight of Gwyneth’s war.
