The Hoaxer

I’m hit, I’m hit, he used to cry,
As he slithered to the ground.
Those who feared that he might die,
Went to help and found out
It was a hoax.

Then the cry went up again
Which most of us ignored,
Newcomers hearing the cries of pain,
And took him at his word,
Fell for the hoax.

He never ceased to try it on
Till it became a bore,
So much so that everyone
Would teat it as before,
As just a hoax.

Then there came the fateful day
When under fierce attack,
I’m hit, I’m hit, we heard him say,
As slowly he fell back
It was no hoax.

Because of all he’d done before,
The foolish things he’d said,
We took no notice any more,
As onto death, he bled.
A costly hoax.
