My father had been separated from his regiment and arrived very tired at Dunkirk. At this time the boats were only taking formed companies on board, so as an officer he made up a company of other unattached soldiers and marched them onto a boat and to safety. He used to say he could never remember much about the crossing because they were all too tired. He died in 1970 but is still a hero to me
