During the war I was in the AFS. I had a hairdressing business and continued to run this and do part time fire fighting in the control rooms where I manned the telephones and kept records of fires and personnel. In the daytime I did hairdressing and at nights manned different fire stations. We were not prepared for the personnel equipment and the firemen did not have a change of clothes and food was short in the canteen. I was in the AFS and NFS for three years until I was married in 1942.
