I can’t remember being really short of anything. There were lots of allotments and people had big gardens.
We grew plenty of vegetables, like swede and potatoes, and we caught pigeons and pheasants all the time. We all kept chickens and my grandfather used to trap sparrows to eat.
We used to go and snare rabbits, but in harvest time we children would go up to the fields and when the rabbits popped out we’d be there with our sticks to get them!
That’s where I spent my summer school holidays, in the fields
