My mother's birthday is 8th May, and on 8th May 1945, I was a little girl of 5 years, living on Blackburn Road, Accrington opposite a street lamp.

I can remember being awakend by buskers playing under the lamp opposite my bedroom. Very excited, I ran to my parents bedroom to get them out of bed to see the band, who I thought were celebrating my mother's birthday.

It was coming daylight, and my mother turned over in bed with the comment "go back to bed, they're enjoying the end of the war!". And I did!
