I’m John Williams, I was in the RAF during the war.
The day after VE Day was announced, we immobilised all the aircraft, so that no drunken pilots could take off, we bought an ox, and it was roasted on the edge of what was called the aerodrome. It roasted all day long, and at about ten o clock at night, we all went to enjoy it. And the only things that could eat it by then, were the dogs! We couldn’t eat it.
When VJ day arrived, I was in Palestine. We didn’t do any celebrating there, because we were flying all the way through, well, the air crew were. I was with the ground crew. We were doing air and sea rescue in the Mediterranean. And I’m afraid that day we flew for 12 hours.
