It may not be common knowledge that there was a legal requirement for young people aged 16 to “register” during ?1943-4. Everyone was supposed to join a Youth organization if not already a member, such as Scouts, Guides, Red Cross, Army Cadets etc.
In my case I was already a St. Johns Ambulance cadet, but to support a friend also joined an evening class for singing which produced a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta each year and that counted!
Most young people did seem to be involved in something in those times, the boys especially being cadets in the Force of their choice. Presumably the aim was to be usefully occupied and off the streets. Might it be a good idea today in 2005?
