Sweets were rationed and even though they were rationed they were not easily obtained. If we heard the local sweet shop had mars bars or milky ways in there was a queue round the block to spend your sweet coupons. Surprisingly I don’t remember missing sweets very much, even though I’d been used to them before the war. You got used to being without luxuries simply because they were not obtainable and by virtue of that you didn’t miss them, although I do remember great excitement one day when it was rumoured there were bananas at the local fruit shop, although I never saw one until after the war.
