Living as we did then within a short distance of Northolt RAF airfield, people living in the area received most of the bombs intended for the airfield, this also was the case in some night raids.
One October night in late 1941, my family and I had just arrived home from a visit to my Grandmother and were settled down for the night, having no Anderson or indoor Morrison shelters at that time , my parents slept in the bed which was now down stairs in the front room, my sister and brother slept under the bed, and I was on the settee with the high back facing the windows.
We had all just got off to sleep when the world seemed to be coming to an end, a hugh bang and the sound of breaking glass, with the room glowing red from a fire, it was a land mine which drifted down on a parachute just missing us and landing in the next road.
The house was a wreck we had canvase nailed to the empty window frames and many other tempory repairs, which were still waiting to be finished long after the war had ended.
