My grandmother’s house backed on to the railway line. She was in the back garden one day, pegging out the washing. She had a mouthful of pegs. She looked up and saw a German plane flying down the railway line. They were looking for the ordinance factory. She could clearly see the pilot and the insignia on the plane. When it had gone she went inside and said to grandfather, “What shall I do I’ve just see a German plane?” He didn’t believe her, he thought she was joking!
I was 11 years old when war started and went to English Martyrs Girls School. When I was about 15 I was walking to school in my school uniform and I heard whistling. When I turned round it was two American Soldiers who were whistling at me. I was terrified and hurried on without looking back. You daren’t look at a boy then for fear of what father would say!
