My mother and father married at the local church in Colchester on a very hot day in August 1940. My mum went into town on the morning of the wedding to take the wedding cake to the restaurant where the reception was to be held. She caught a bus back which stopped to pick up a soldier in uniform under North Station railway bridge. He kissed the her and everyone on the bus thought it was the bridegroom home on leave. In fact it was her brother who was to give her away. Just incase he did not make it home her uncle had been asked to come in his best suit and wearing gloves to be prepared to take her to church.
My mother had a new dress, veil and carried flowers. My dad's sister altered the bridesmaid's dress she had worn at a friend's wedding in December 1939 and mum's sister made a dress out of flower patterned material which was similar in colour but certainly did not match.
The guests who came from London had to get permission to travel to Colchester for the wedding. My parents had a few days in London for a honeymoon.
