My uncle told me a story about the evacuation of british troops from Dunkirk, which to this day I find impossible to believe. He said he was wading out towards the rescue boats, the sea was up to his neck, and when he was pulled aboard one of the boats, he realised he had lost his rifle. On returning to his base in England, he was made to pay for the rifle by instalments taken from his pay.Can anyone confirm whether this actually happened or not.My own feeling is that it did happen, but it would be nice to have it confirmed.
