I was 18 when the war started. Nothing happened for a while.

The Doodlebugs came over, like an aeroplane, then they stopped, you counted to 9, then down they come, but you didn’t know where.

We had one drop at the back of the house. My twins were upstairs with my Mum, she brought them down, and we had a Doodlebug drop at the back of us, the windows came in, and all the soot came down the chimney, they were covered! I wasn’t there at the time.

There was a shelter, about half a mile away. We were supposed to be in a safe area. We didn’t have shelters. My Dad was going to build a shelter, he dug a hole in the garden, but it filled with water!
