I was a firewoman on duty in the control room. Sometimes we'd get false alarms with good intent and other time false alarms with malicious intent.
I used to answer emergency calls which were usually notifying us about bombs dropping.
One day in 1943 I was stationed at Shooters Hill and a German bomber plane dropped a bomb in the playgound at Sandhurst Primary. 36 children under the age of 10 and 6 members of staff lost their lives.
I remember the day of the funeral - it was a Monday morning. It was very muggy with a bit of drizzle and low cloud. I was one of 6 chosen to be in the Guard of Honour at the funeral. I remember seeing these little white coffins and it was so upsetting. One of firemen lost his daughter in that playground bombing.
