The day war baoke out I was sitting in a lovely Church - St. Mary's, Totnes, Devon with my best friend Elsie. I was all dressed up in my finery- a long grey fitted coat and matching hat, and my best friend was at my side. It was a glorious autumnal day and we were very happy. We were sitting right up in the front of the pews trying not to giggle and whispering together as the then Vicar climbed into th pulpit to preach his sermon.
