This story was submitted to the People’s War site by a volunteer from CSV Actiondesk on behalf of Mr Stan Hilton and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr Hilton fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

My most unforgettable memory was being detoured from West Africa to Singapore to pick up THE VERY FIRST prisoners of war.

Our fellow men, standing, being held up, falling down, lying down because they couldn’t stand. I have never seen human beings in such a state, flesh just hanging over bone, many with torture marks and many with fingers missing.

Were they pleased to see us, some cried, some flung their arms around us, some just stared and stared, some shuffled and rambled. I shall live with that for ever.

Our food was poor, but they couldn’t eat even the basics, anything other than rice they were sick.
