Montevideo Harbour December 1939

Battle of the River Plate.
This series of photographs were taken by my father-in-law, Robert Clay, at Montevideo, Uraquay. They show the German pocket battleship 'Admiral Graf Spee' being scuttled in Montevideo Harbour on 17th December 1939. Following a battle with the British cruisers 'Exeter','Ajax, and 'Achilles', the captain of the 'Graf Spee' Captain Hans Langsdorff scuttled his own ship. Langsdorff committed suicide two or three days later.
