As told by Betty Lark

I was evacuated to Higworth, near Swindon. we were taken to a hall and put on a stage where people picked and chose who they wanted. i was with an old couple, whose cottage was lit only by candles. We were three to a bed at one time, but later I was put in a room on my own. The cottage creeked and I was frightened: I'd never slept on my own.
The old lady put my hair in plaits, which I didn't like so I undid them.
