It all started at 40 Kirstall Street Walton. It was “The May blitz” and my grandmother’s house got a direct hit in the street behind ours and we were in the shelters when the door blew off. I was 4 years of age. We had to get out so my mother took my baby brother who was a lot younger than myself and my father carried me down the back entry and I could hear my mother shouting “Frank, Frank, wait for me!” As a little girl I wanted the loo so we called into the outside toilet of one of the houses that was hit. I could see all the planes going overhead as I sat on the loo and could see the guns firing.
We walked all the way to West Derby to Aunty Hilda and Uncle John’s and all the children were put to bed Top and Tail. I will never forget that night.
