I remember having a Mickey Mouse gas mask with a red tongue which I carried always over my shoulder. I lived in Gateshead and remember being carried to the air raid shelters. I was 3 when the war started and remember VE Day when we had ice cream and had a street party. I remember rationing when children got a ¼ of sweet. We ate liquorice root because we couldn’t get sweets.
I remember a bomb being dropped on Saltworth Park. Everyone went and stuck a stamp on the bomb for the war effort!
